NDSM-werf: Amsterdam’s Post-Industrial Art Wharf Across the IJ

We caught the free ferry over on a bright morning and had the graffiti halls almost to ourselves before the first coffee crowd arrived.

The short answer

NDSM-werf is a vast former shipyard on the north bank of the IJ, now a raw, art-covered culture space of graffiti-clad warehouses, artists' studios, waterside bars and Europe's biggest flea market. It's free to wander, reached by a free 15-minute ferry from behind Centraal Station. Skip the tourist crush of the centre: this is a completely different, industrial-creative Amsterdam, and the best free afternoon in the city.

What is it, exactly?

NDSM-werf is a huge former shipyard on the north bank of the IJ, reinvented as one of Europe’s great post-industrial culture spaces. Think cavernous warehouses covered in street art, artists’ studios welded into shipping containers, a monthly flea market (the IJ-Hallen, Europe’s biggest), festivals, waterside bars and the odd rusting crane turned into a hotel. It’s raw, sprawling and gloriously un-manicured — the anti-Damrak.

Is it worth visiting — and why not just stay in the centre?

Because the centre is where everyone else is. Ten minutes on a free ferry drops you into a completely different Amsterdam: industrial, creative, and full of space to breathe. Wander the graffiti halls, grab a coffee by the water, watch the ferries criss-cross the IJ. If you like your cities with a bit of grit and a lot of art, it’s the best free afternoon in town.

How do you get there?

Walk to the back of Centraal Station and hop on the free GVB ferry to NDSM (route F3) — a scenic 15-minute crossing of the IJ. Ferries run frequently through the day and evening. You can also take the metro or a bus into Amsterdam-Noord, but the ferry is half the fun and costs nothing.

When to go, and what it costs

Wandering the wharf and its street art is free, any day. Come on a dry afternoon for the best of the outdoor spaces and bars. If the giant IJ-Hallen flea market is on (one weekend most months), plan around it — it’s a highlight. The excellent STRAAT street-art museum on site is ticketed if you want to go indoors.

Insider tip

Time your visit around sunset and ride the ferry back with the city lights coming on over the water — it’s one of Amsterdam’s quietly great free experiences. Check the NDSM and IJ-Hallen calendars before you go, as the market and festival days are when the wharf is at its liveliest.
