Amsterdam
In short
Skip the Anne Frank queue and the Damrak crush. The Amsterdam locals actually enjoy is a post-industrial art wharf across the water, a secret Catholic church hidden in a canal-house attic, a walled medieval courtyard where the city noise simply stops, a lived-in 18th-century canal house, and an expressionist housing block shaped like a ship. All reachable by tram, metro or a free ferry — and several are free or cheap.
Best time to visit
Late April to May (tulip season, mild, and lighter than the summer crush) and September are the sweet spots. The canals and courtyards are lovely year-round; the NDSM ferry and outdoor corners are best on a dry day. Avoid the peak-summer weekends in the centre if you can.
Getting around
Tap in and out with any contactless bank card or phone (OVpay) on the trams, metro and buses, or use an OV-chipkaart. Behind Centraal Station, the GVB ferries across the IJ to Amsterdam-Noord are completely free. The centre is small and walkable, and the whole city is famously flat and bike-friendly.
