London rewards anyone willing to walk two Tube stops past the obvious. Skip the London Eye queue and the Oxford Street crush: the city Londoners actually enjoy includes a free, legal graffiti tunnel under Waterloo, a warehouse stuffed with salvaged film-set neon in Walthamstow, and cold-water swimming ponds on Hampstead Heath. All three are free or cheap, reachable on a single contactless tap, and none of them appear on the standard first-timer itinerary.
Best time to visit
Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September) are the sweet spot — long daylight, mild weather and thinner crowds than the July–August peak. The Hampstead swimming ponds are at their best from May to September; the neon warehouse and the graffiti tunnel work year-round, since both are covered. Only the ponds are really season-dependent.
Getting around
Forget paper tickets. Tap in (and out, on the Tube) with any contactless bank card or phone — fares match Oyster and a daily cap of roughly £8.90 in Zones 1–2 means you never overpay once you've made a few journeys. The Tube and the dense bus network reach all three gems: they sit on the Bakerloo, Victoria and Northern lines. Locals plan routes with Citymapper.
